Born into a world of gang violence, drugs, death, and murder, Chareka’s future looked hopeless and bleak. In her own words, “I grew up in a very hostile, dysfunctional environment... very negative, very dark, very disappointing”. You could imagine that growing up in such an intense situation would suffocate all forms of hope, but in high school an unlikely flicker of light pierced the darkness. A dance teacher who was christian saw exceptional potential in Chareka to become a professional dancer and began pouring her love and attention into her. This catapulted her out of disparity and into freedom as a form of personal and spiritual expression. Even now with a Masters Degree in Fine Arts, and a personal dance studio business, faith in Jesus is not always easy.
